Born on October 10th, 1982 in Fuli, Hualien, Taiwanese singer-songwriter and Hit FM presenter Waa Wei first made a name for herself in the early 2000s as the frontwoman of the five-time Golden Melody Award-nominated indie outfit Natural Q, until she had no choice but to call a hiatus from music in 2006 due to a throat injury. By 2007, however, she had returned with a debut solo album, the upbeat, folk-tinged çèçæ´» (La Dolce Vita), which shifted over 10,000 units. Juggling her music career alongside various acting roles, she soon met film music producer Chen Jianqi, with whom she created the 2008 EP 泡泡 (Bubble). The pair have since worked together extensively, fleshing out Weiâs sparse, breathy brand of indie and forming a new band entitled Lovely Baby. Many of her works have since received coveted awards and nominations, with 2011âs ä¸å 許åæ³£çå ´å (No Crying) winning a Chinese Music Media Award and 2014âs 鿝è¦ç¸ä¿¡ææ åæ··èå (You Lovely Bastard) bagging a HITO Award. Weiâs sixth LP, èç并ä¸çäºéå¿ (Hidden, Not Forgotten), arrived in 2019. Like many of her other albums, it incorporates an eclectic range of styles including jazz comping and indie dance sensibilities into the mix alongside her main area of expertise: pared-back acoustic ballads. Flexing her multilingual abilities over the course of the album, Wei sings passages in English on various tracks, weaving in and out of her native Mandarin. The album received six nominations at the 2020 Golden Melody Awards, where she won the title of Best Mandarin Female Singer. Wei returned with a cover of Penny Tai's "è¡è§çç¥ç¦" the same year.
