Valery Pavlovich Afanassiev is a Russian pianist and novelist. He studied piano at the Moscow Conservatory under Dmitri Blagoi, Emil Gilels, and Yakov Zak. In 1969, he won 1st prize at the Bach Competition in Leipzig, followed by the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels in 1972. Known for his interpretations of Schubert, Beethoven, Brahms, Schumann, Mussorgsky, and Chopin, he first became known as Gidon Kremerâs duo partner and has also performed with Mischa Maisky, and is primarily associated with Romantic repertoire; he has also worked for a period as a conductor. Afanassiev is also the author of several novels written in French and English, as well as poetry and plays.
