Toronzo Cannon was born on February 14, 1968 in Chicago, Illinois. He grew up near Robert Taylor Homes and Theresa's Lounge, where he encountered blues artists like Buddy Guy and Junior Wells. Cannon began playing guitar at age 22, initially focusing on reggae before transitioning to blues. He formed his own band, The Cannonball Express, in 2001. His album John the Conquer Root (Delmark, 2013), was nominated for a Blues Music Award as Rock Blues Album of the Year. He signed with Alligator Records in 2015 and released his debut album on the label, The Chicago Way, co-produced by Cannon and Bruce Iglauer, on February 26, 2016. This album was nominated for a Blues Music Award as Album of the Year in 2017. Cannon followed with albums The Preacher, the Politician or the Pimp (2019), and Shut Up & Play! (2024).
