Theatre of Tragedy

Theatre of Tragedy, a Norwegian gothic metal band, was founded in 1993 by Raymond István Rohonyi and Pål Bjåstad, with drummer Hein Frode Hansen joining shortly thereafter. The band’s early work, including a demo and the single Machine, established their signature “Beauty and the Beast” vocal contrast, featuring Liv Kristine Espenæs on female passages. Their debut album Theatre of Tragedy (1995) and the follow‑up Velvet Darkness They Fear (1996) reached significant underground success, with tracks such as "Der Tanz der Schatten" gaining club popularity. Subsequent releases, such as Aégis (1998), Musique (2000), Assembly (2002), Storm (2006), and Forever is the World (2009), showed a progression from gothic metal to electronic influences and back, accompanied by tours across Europe and signings with Massacre Records and AFM. The group disbanded after a farewell concert in October 2010.
