The Whirling Dervishes, an American alternative rock band from Westfield, New Jersey, formed in 1981 as Johnny Bravo and his Whirling Dervishes. The original lineup included Bob Ardrey, Don Dazzo, Dan Paola, Billy Siegel, Jerry Heer, and John Bryan. They shortened their name to The Whirling Dervishes in 1983 and gained popularity through airplay on WHTG-FM. Their early releases included the vinyl EPs History Kicks You (1983) and Affordable World (1985). In 1992, they released their full-length CD album Strange and Wonderful, along with the EP Wish It Would Snow. The band's cover of "You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch" became a perennial Christmas classic. They also wrote and recorded the theme song for NBC's television show The Adventures of Mark and Brian in 1991. Ardrey died in 2024, marking the end of the original lineup's active years together.
