The Vulgar Boatmen

The Vulgar Boatmen, an American rock band, were formed in 1982 in Gainesville, Florida, by students at the University of Florida. The band initially released cassette-only albums such as Women and Boatmen First (1982) and All Bands on Deck (1983). As key members departed, Robert Ray became one of the group's principal songwriters and vocalists alongside Dale Lawrence. The band is known for their pop melodies and stark lyrics, often focusing on themes of women and automobile travel, with frequent use of the viola. In 1989, they released their first studio album, You and Your Sister, followed by Please Panic (1992) and Opposite Sex (1995). The band issued a compilation album, Wide Awake, in 2003.
