The Suburbs

The Suburbs, an alternative punk rock/funk/new wave band from Minneapolis, Minnesota, formed in 1977. Keyboardist Chan Poling and guitarist Beej Chaney were inspired by the Los Angeles punk scene to form a band. The Suburbs released their first record, a nine-song 7-inch red vinyl EP titled The Suburbs, in 1978, which was also the first release for Twin/Tone Records. The band gained popularity playing at influential venues like Jay's Longhorn Bar and First Avenue. Their breakthrough came with the release of their first full-length LP, In Combo (1980), followed by Credit in Heaven (1981) and Love is the Law (1983). Notable songs include “Music for Boys” and “Waiting”. The band won the Minnesota Music Award for Best LP for Credit in Heaven in 1982, and signed with A&M Records in 1986. The Suburbs disbanded in 1987 due to lack of radio play.
