The Stars Of Faith

The Stars of Faith was an American gospel vocal group from Philadelphia, formed in 1958 by former members of the Clara Ward Singers: Marion Williams, Kitty Parham, Frances Steadman, Esther Ford, and Henrietta Waddy. They released their first recording in 1958 under Savoy Records. In 1960, Mattie Harper replaced Ford, and in 1965, Williams left to pursue a solo career. Steadman took over leadership, with her daughter Sadie Keys joining in 1968. Dorothy Blackwell joined in 1967, and singer Willie De John joined in 1968. Accompanists included Alfred Bolden and Johnny Thompson. They toured extensively, including a world tour with Langston Hughes' musical Black Nativity in 1962. They received a Rising Star Award in the Down Beat Critics Poll in 1963.
