The Notwist

The Notwist, formed in 1989 in Weilheim in Oberbayern, Germany, emerged from a local student band into an act. Their self‑titled debut Notwist (1990) combined punk, rock, and metal, followed by Nook (1992) and the EP Johnny and Mary (1993) on Big Store. The 1995 release 12 introduced electronic elements, continuing with Shrink (1998). The breakthrough Neon Golden (2002) reached Number 10 on the charts and earned the 2002 German Record Critics Award. Subsequent albums The Devil, You + Me (2008), Sturm (2009, soundtrack), Close to the Glass (2014), and Messier Objects (2015) expanded their discography. The band continued touring, signed with City Slang and Sub Pop, and influenced the indie scene. They released albums Vertigo Days (2021) and News from Planet Zombie (2026).
