Hailing from Claremont, California, and featuring John Darnielle (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Peter Hughes (bass, backing vocals), Jon Wurster (drums) and Matt Douglas (multi-instrumentalist), American indie rock band The Mountain Goats began their career in 1991. After a few limited releases, the 1994 studio album Zopilote Machine officially opened the band's discography. This was followed by the albums Sweden (1995), Nothing for Juice (1996), Full Force Galesburg (1997) and The Coroner's Gambit (2000). In 2002, The Mountain Goats broke into the U.S. charts for the first time with All Hail West Texas (#140), while Tallahassee, released the same year, marked the start of a collaboration with the 4AD label, leading to a string of more high-profile and critically acclaimed releases, including Get Lonely (2006) and Heretic Pride (2008). The band achieved their highest US chart ranking in 2015 with the release of Beat the Champ (#65), a concept album about John Darnielle's obsession with professional wrestling as a child. The Mountain Goats then steadily punctuated their career with new albums, never failing to renew themselves with each recording. These included Goths (2017), In League with Dragons (2019), Getting Into Knives (2020), Dark in Here (2021), Bleed Out (2022), Jenny from Thebes (2023) and Through This Fire Across from Peter Balkan (2025).
