The Minus 5

The Minus 5 is an alternative rock collective founded in 1993 by Scott McCaughey (Young Fresh Fellows), often in collaboration with Peter Buck of R.E.M. A project of variable geometry, The Minus 5 mixes alternative pop rock, garage rock, country and offbeat folk, with a touch of humor and lo-fi experimentation. Their eclectic discography includes albums such as Down with Wilco (2003), produced with members of Wilco, and The Gun Album (2006). McCaughey remains the driving force, surrounded by a changing cast of musicians from the American indie scene, including Steve Wynn, Jeff Tweedy, Ken Stringfellow and Sean O'Hagan. With almost twenty albums to their credit, The Minus 5 have released the albums Stroke Manor (2019), Calling Cortez (2023) and Oar On, Penelope! (2025).
