The Lowest of the Low, a Canadian alternative rock group from Toronto, Ontario, was formed in 1991 by Ron Hawkins, Stephen Stanley, and David Alexander. The band gained popularity performing on the Queen Street West club circuit before releasing their debut album Shakespeare My Butt in 1991. The album became one of the best-selling independent releases in Canadian history. In 1994, they released Hallucigenia under A&M Records but disbanded later that year due to creative tensions. The band reunited multiple times over the years, releasing albums such as Sordid Fiction (2004), Do the Right Now (2017), and Agitpop (2019). Their album Shakespeare My Butt was named one of the ten greatest albums in Canadian music history by the music magazine Chart.
