The Hollywood Argyles

Formed in 1960, The Hollywood Argyles were an American musical ensemble put together by producer-songwriter Kim Fowley and his friend Gary S. Paxton. The group are best known for their hit single "Alley Oop", which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in July 1960. The song, originally written as a country track by Dallas Frazier, was recorded with studio musicians and friends, including Sandy Nelson and Harper Cosby. Despite its success, there was no actual group to perform live; Gary S. Paxton and Kim Fowley had created the name Hollywood Argyles based on their Hollywood location. The group released their debut album, Presenting The Hollywood Argyles, in December 1960. Their follow-up single "Hully Gully" was also released that year, though it did not achieve the same level of success as "Alley Oop". The group's activities ceased shortly after, with no further releases or performances. Gary S. Paxton later formed Garpax Records and became a gospel artist, while Fowley produced hits for other artists, including the Murmaids' "Popsicles and Icicles" in 1963.
