The Hillbilly Thomists

The Hillbilly Thomists is a bluegrass band formed in 2014 by Dominican friars from Washington D.C. Born from the meeting of Thomas Joseph White and Austin Litke, it brings together eight musicians and singers blending bluegrass, gospel, Appalachian folk and traditional Irish music influences. The group made a name for itself in 2017 with its homonymous debut album, two tracks of which were included in the soundtracks to the films True Grit and O Brother, Where Art Thou? by brothers Joel and Ethan Cohen. The Hillbilly Thomists followed up their debut with Living for the Other Side (2021) and Holy Ghost Power (2022), which differed from the first in that they featured original compositions rather than covers of country or gospel standards, and were open to genres such as blues and rock'n'roll. In 2024, their fourth album, Marigold, reached #2 in the bluegrass charts and led to a cross-country tour.
