The Dark Soldier

Hailing from Colchester in Essex, Ray Keith is a pioneering force in the jungle and drum'n'bass scene. Launching his career as a DJ in local clubs and raves in the late 1980s, he developed a signature style steeped in funk, soul, and underground vibes—culminating in a move to London’s vibrant dance music circuit. By 1994, he established Dread Recordings, his own label through which he shaped the genre’s direction, releasing seminal tracks like "The Chopper" and the alias‑defining anthem by Renegade, "Terrorist". Under the alias The Dark Soldier, Ray Keith released tracks that became staples of drum'n'bass lore—characterised by punishing basslines, ominous atmospheres, and genre-defining energy. His “Dark Soldier” track gained enduring status, spawning remixes by key artists like Bladerunner and Benny L, and marking itself as a high‑water mark in jungle history. In 2001, he released the multi‑vinyl album Ray Keith Presents The Dark Soldier – Sinister on Dread Recordings, featuring a suite of dark junglist cuts—including “Sinister (Bad Boy, Pt.1)”, “Dark Soldier (VIP mix)”, “UFO”, and many others—cementing his legacy in physical media and underground culture. He has continued to put out releases sporadically over the years as The Dark Soldier, including 2025 vinyl 12" "Ghost".
