Formed in Portland, Oregon, in 1993, the American alternative rock band The Dandy Warhols gained recognition among a niche audience with their debut album Dandys Rule, OK? (1995), released by the independent label Tim/Kerr Records and peaking at No. 93 in the UK. Noticed by Capitol Records, the band—led by charismatic singer and guitarist Courtney Taylor-Taylor—gained a wider audience with a string of successful albums: The Dandy Warhols Come Down (1997), *Thirteen Tales from the Bohemia* (2000), featuring the hit “Bohemian Like You” (No. 5 in the UK), and *Welcome to the Monkey House* (2003), which marked a shift toward electronic rock. In response, their rival band, The Brian Jonestown Massacre—featured in the film Dig! (2004)—returned to the roots of indie rock with Odditorium to the Warlords of Mars (2005) and Earth to the Dandy Warhols (2008), though they failed to achieve the same results in Europe and never fully conquered the U.S. charts, where their success remained limited. Constantly evolving musically, The Dandy Warhols opened up more to psychedelic influences that began to take precedence over their early garage rock sound, as evidenced by the successive releases The Dandy Warholes Are Sound (2009) and This Machine (2012)—with folk-tinged sounds—followed by a nostalgic return to the stage with Thirteen Tales from the Bohemia Live at the Wonder (2014) and the garage rock of Distortland (2016). Having returned to the independent status of their early days and drifting from label to label, the quartet recorded the EP Live at the X-Ray Cafe for Record Store Day (2016), before setting to work on their tenth studio album, Why You So Crazy (2019), which blends danceable rock with psychedelia. The next album, Tafelmuzik Means More When You’re Alone (2020), is also their most obscure and electronic, featuring ambient and dub sequences. In 2023, the EP The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald was based on improvisations and featured vocals by Sylvain Sylvain (New York Dolls), while the following album Rockmaker (2024) synthesized the band’s various styles. On March 20, 2026, *Pin Ups* brings together seventeen covers of songs by artists such as The Cure, Gang of Four, The Clash, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, and The Cramps. After a few European shows in June, The Dandy Warhols are planning new dates in California, followed by a tour of Australia and New Zealand at the end of the year. On May 16, 2025, the EP Rock Remaker expands on Rockmaker with five remixes by artists including GLOK, Trentemøller, and A Place to Bury Strangers. In December, The Dandy Warhols announced Pin Ups, an album compiling covers recorded over the years—sometimes for specific releases or markets—many of which were then made widely available for the first time. The project opens with “Kiss Off,” a cover of the Violent Femmes song featuring Zia McCabe on lead vocals. Released on March 20, 2026, by Beat the World Records and Little Cloud Records, Pin Ups features seventeen tracks and pays tribute to artists who have influenced the band’s sound, including The Cure, Gang of Four, The Clash, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, The Cramps, The Runaways, and The Cult.
