The Casuals

The Casuals are a British pop group formed in 1961 in Lincoln, England. They are best known for their No. 2 hit "Jesamine" in 1968, a landmark example of British orchestral pop of the period, blending lush arrangements, vocal harmonies and romantic sensibility. The band was founded by John Roy "Johnny" Tebb (vocals, keyboards) and Howard Newcombe (guitar), later joined by various musicians, including Alan "Plug" Taylor (bass) and Mick Bray (drums), replaced by Bob O'Brien. In their early days, The Casuals covered beat-style rock and pop songs, before developing a more sophisticated style, influenced by baroque and psychedelic pop and Beach Boys-style harmonies. After the success of "Jesamine " came the Toy EP (1969) and the only original album, Hour World (1970). Several changes of musicians took place before the name was changed to American Jam Band in 1972-1974 and the band split up in 1976. A compilation, The Very Best of the Casuals, was released in 1997, followed in 2017 by The Jolly Joker Years 1967-1969.
