The Bellamy Brothers

The Bellamy Brothers is a pop / country duo formed in Dade City, Florida in 1968. Founded by brothers David (born September 16, 1950) and Howard (born Homer Howard on February 2, 1946), the Bellamy Brothers are best known for their 1976 single “Let Your Love Flow,” which reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Raised in a musical household – their father was in a Western swing band – the duo learned to play several instruments including guitar, mandolin and banjo (while David also learned how to play piano, accordion, organ, and the fiddle). They made their live debut in 1968 performing at a benefit concert with their father. The duo continued to play country music while also tackling pop and rock in a variety of bands. They briefly moved to Atlanta, Georgia and formed a band called Jericho, but grew tired of the scene and moved back to Dade City. Discovered by singer-songwriter Jim Stafford, David Bellamy co-wrote Stafford’s hit “Spiders and Snakes,” which gave them the confidence and financial means to relocate to Los Angeles, California. Signing to Curb Records in 1975, they released “Let Your Love Flow” the following year. The single was an international success and reached number 1 in the US, Canada, Germany, and Switzerland. It also landed comfortably in the Top 10 in Australia and the UK. While the single was a pop hit, the Bellamy Brothers didn’t achieve much success with subsequent singles until “If I Said You Have a Beautiful Body, Would You Hold It Against Me” hit the top spot on the Country Singles chart in 1979. They turned their attention to the country music market and scored several more number 1 hits including “Sugar Daddy” (1980), “Dancin’ Cowboys” (1980), “Do You Love as Good as You Look” (1981), “For All the Wrong Reasons” (1981), “Redneck Girl” (1982), “When I’m Away from You” (1983), “I Need More of You” (1985), “Too Much Is Not Enough” with the Forester Sisters (1986), and “Kids of the Baby Boom” (1987). The duo continued to chart into the 1990s, but the hits dried up by 1995. They have remained active as recording artists and live performers nearly 50 years after their first number 1 hit.
