The Apartments

Formed in Brisbane in 1978, Australian indie rock band The Apartments has Peter Milton Walsh as its sole constant member. Originally a quartet consisting of P. M. Walsh (vocals, guitar), Michael O'Connell (guitar), Peter Whitby (bass) and Peter Martin (drums), its name comes from the Billy Wilder film The Apartment (1960). A former member of The Go-Betweens, Peter Milton Walsh and his new band signed the EP The Return of the Hypnotist to the Able label in May 1979, before forming Out of Nowhere with three other musicians in 1981. After an episode in New York, where he joined The Colors for a few months, the leader returned to Australia and reformed The Apartments with four other musicians, with whom he recorded the cult debut album The Evening Visits... And Stays for Years, released by Rough Trade in 1985. The London-based band released the single "All You Wanted", which reached No. 29 in the UK independent charts in 1986. Returning to Australia three years later, Peter Milton Walsh re-formed The Apartments for the recording of the album Drift (1993), acclaimed in France where it was released on the New Rose label. Other albums follow, including A Life Full of Farewells (1995), the acoustic Fête Foraine (1996) and Apart (1997). Peter Milton Walsh then spent his time with his son, who battled illness and died in 1999. He retired from the music scene for several years before re-forming The Apartments in 2007 for a series of concerts. After a French tour entitled It's Not Our World Anymore in 2012, the band recorded No Song, No Spell, No Madrigal, which was released in April 2015, one month after the reissue of the first album. Further tours take place in Europe and Australia, before the release of Live at l'Ubu (2019), recorded in Rennes, France. In 2020, the Talitres label releases the new album In and Out of the Light, followed five years later by That's What the Music Is For.
