Teddybears

Formed in Stockholm, Sweden in 1991, Teddybears is an alternative rock band founded by musician / songwriter Joakim Åhlund and vocalist / guitarist Patrick Arve, both members of grindcore band Skull. The line-up also included Joakim’s brother Klaus Åhlund. Rather than form a new band, they merely changed the band’s name from Skulls to Teddybears Sthlm. Initially, their sound was hardcore punk, but over the years, they have added other elements into their sound including electronica, reggae, and hip-hop. They released their debut album, You Are Teddybears, in 1993. The album was slammed by many critics but was embraced by punk rock fans. Their next album, I Can’t Believe It’s Teddybears Sthlm, was released in 1996 but the band did not achieve commercial success until 2000’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Highschool, which landed on top of the Swedish Albums chart. The album earned the band four Grammis Awards – Sweden’s version of the Grammys – in 2001. The album featured the original version of the song “Punkrocker,” which was re-recorded in 2006 with Iggy Pop on lead vocals. The Iggy version became a hit when used for a Cadillac ad campaign and gained new attention when featured in the 2025 motion picture Superman. Teddybears Sthlm success continued with the release of the album Fresh (2004), the last album to feature Sthlm in the band’s name. Teddybears continued to dazzle their fans with subsequent albums Soft Machine (2006), Devil’s Music (2010), and Rock On! (2016).
