Tag Team

Tag Team, consisting of Cecil Glenn and Steve Gibson, were an American hip-hop/pop-rap duo from Denver, Colorado. They met at Manual High School in 1982 and began their musical journey together. In the late 1980s, after moving to Atlanta, Georgia, they were inspired by Southern rap music and released their first single, "Strictly Political", as The Tag Team Crew in 1990. In August 1992, Tag Team recorded "Whoomp! (There It Is)", which became a huge hit. Despite initial rejections from record labels, the duo self-financed the release, and it quickly gained popularity in Atlanta. Mercury Records suggested they contact Al Bell of Stax Records, who signed them. The single reached number one on both the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart and the Hot 100 Single Sales chart in early 1993, sticking at the second spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for seven weeks straight. It achieved platinum status within months and received its fourth platinum certification in February 1994. The song was featured in various movies and became a cultural phenomenon. The group's debut album, Whoomp! (There It Is), was certified gold. However, subsequent releases, including the 1995 album Audio Entertainment, did not achieve the same level of success. Tag Team's record label, Bellmark Records, filed for bankruptcy in 1997 following a lawsuit over sampling rights. The duo took an extended hiatus from recording and performing, although they never formally disbanded.
