Hailing from Coburg, Victoria, Australia, Surprise Chef is an instrumental band formed around guitarist Lachlan Stuckey and organist/keyboardist Jethro Curtin, supported by the rhythm section of Carl Lindeberg (electric bass) and Andrew Congues (drums). With influences ranging from raw funk and psychedelic soul instrumental groups to library music and obscure 1970s soundtracks, Surprise Chef deploys cinematic atmospheres served by organic instrumentation with a highly polished studio sound, lending a vintage feel to albums All News Is Good News (2019), Daylight Savings (2020), Education & Recreation (2022) and the Friendship EP (2023). Appreciated by fans of little-known or forgotten vinyl, the quartet signed successively to the Mr. Bongo and Big Crown Records labels also appeals to a public fond of beautiful sound. Their taste for sophistication doesn't prevent them from improvising on stage. Their fourth album, Superb, was released in 2025.
