Supermax

Kurt Johann Hauenstein (* January 14, 1949 in Vienna; † March 20/21, 2011 in Vienna) founded the music project Supermax in Frankfurt am Main in 1976. The band combines reggae, funk, disco and rock. The founding members include Kurt Johann Hauenstein (bass, vocals, Mini-Moog), Hans Ochs (guitar), Ken Taylor (bass), Lothar Krell (keyboards), Peter Koch (percussion), Jürgen Zöller (drums) and the singers Cee Cee Cobb and Jean Graham. Later, Bernadet Onore Eben and Jessica Hauenstein added background vocals. The second studio album World of Today is released in 1977 and reaches number 2 in the German album charts. The single "Lovemachine" becomes a big hit in 1977: number 4 in Germany, number 6 in Switzerland and number 9 in Austria; it also reaches number 96 in the US Billboard Black Charts. The album Fly with Me followed in 1979, reaching number 9 in Germany and marking an international breakthrough. Other albums by the band include Don't Stop the Music (1977) and Types of Skin (1980), which failed to achieve a chart entry despite 230,000 sales. Until the early 1980s, Supermax toured worldwide: as the first multiracial band in South Africa (1981), appearance at the Reggae Sunsplash Festival in Jamaica (1983) - Supermax thus achieved historical significance. Kurt Johann Hauenstein remains the initiator and frontman until his death in 2011. In 2008, Hauenstein receives the Amadeus Austrian Music Award for his life's work and the Silver Medal of Merit of the City of Vienna.
