Not to be confused with the similarly-named British punk act from the 1970s, Strate Jacket is an American punk-rock band that formed in 2019 in Sunnyvale, California. Singer/guitarist Jackson Roemers and bassist Fabian Angel had previously attended high school together, and they completed their band's roster with the addition of a drummer, Nate Mangold, after playing one show with a different lineup. Using the Covid-19 lockdown as an opportunity to develop new material, the three musicians officially debuted in 2020 with a trio of singles: "New York," "I Want…," and "The Executioner's Daughter." "Bad Start" followed in 2023 and became Strate Jacket's first song to receive more than 100,000 digital streams. The song also nodded to the musical influence of Green Day, AFI, and Rancid, three California-based bands whose songs struck a similar balance between punky aggression, poppy polish, and timeless rock & roll. One year later, "Bad Start" reappeared as the first track from Strate Jacket's self-titled debut EP. The song also appeared on the Billboard charts that same summer, debuting at number 40 on the Top 40 Radio Mainstream Rock Songs listing in July 2024.
