Steven Lugerner, born on May 20, 1988, in Redwood City, California, is an American saxophonist, flutist, clarinetist, composer, and music educator. As a teenager, he played multiple instruments in college and theater orchestras and performed with local jazz groups. In 2006, Lugerner moved to New York City to study at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, graduating in 2010. He then moved to Brooklyn, working with various ensembles including the experimental pop band In One Wind and the post-core band killerBOB. His early albums include Narratives (2010) and These Are the Words (2010). He has collaborated with notable musicians such as Fred Hersch, Matt Wilson, Ralph Alessi, Jason Moran, Jane Ira Bloom, John Hébert, and John Hollenbeck. In 2016, he released Jacknife: The Music of Jackie McLean. Lugerner has also taught at the Larchmont Music Academy and Stanford Jazz Workshop.
