Stéphane Degout

A renowned French baritone, Stéphane Degout excels in a variety of repertoires, particularly Baroque music and mélodies. Born in Bourg-en-Bresse (Ain) on June 9, 1975, he grew up in Saint-Jean-de-Niost before moving to Lyon. He attended the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Lyon in 1995, and continued his training at the Atelier Lyrique de l'Opéra National de Lyon in 1998. After making his debut that same year at Aix-en-Provence in Mozart's The Magic Flute, Stéphane Degout went on to take part in masterclasses and perform a host of roles in opera productions throughout Europe and the rest of the world, as far afield as New York's Metropolitan Opera. He has won numerous awards, including second prize in Plácido Domingo's Operalia competition (2002), trophies for Lyric Artist of the Year at the Victoires de la musique classique (2012, 2019), the Grand Prix de l'Académie Charles-Cros in the lyric soloist category (2019) and an International Opera Award (2019), in addition to a Grammy Award nomination (2019). He performs creations by Benoît Mernier(La Dispute, 2013), Philippe Boesmans(Au monde in 2014, Pinocchio in 2017) and George Benjamin(Lessons in Love and Violence in 2018 at London's Covent Garden), and works on the Lied and French mélodie repertoire, in which he excels. Alongside public recitals and the collection Mélodies (with pianist Hélène Lucas, 2010), in which he performs works by Debussy, Duparc, Saint-Saëns, Ravel and Chabrier, the baritone has taken part in numerous recordings, including Brahms: Ein Deutsches Requiem (Laurence Equilbey and Ensemble Accentus, 2004), Puccini: La Bohème (Bertrand de Billy, with Anna Netrebko and Rolando Villazón, 2008), Brahms: A German Requiem (Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the London Philharmonic Orchestra, 2010), Berlioz: Les Troyens (John Nelson with Joyce DiDonato and Michael Spyres, 2017), Debussy: Harmonies du soir (with Sophie Karthäuser and Alain Planès, 2018), the Enfers recital with Raphaël Pichon and Ensemble Pygmalion (2018), Berlioz: Les Nuits d'été (François-Xavier Roth and Ensemble Les Siècles, 2019) and Lieder & Balladen (with Simon Lepper, 2020). The year 2022 sees the release of the albums Ravel: Concertos pour piano - Mélodies by François-Xavier Roth and Les Siècles, Bach: Matthäus-Passion by Raphaël Pichon and Pygmalion, Mahler: Das Lied von der Erde by Maxime Pascal and Le Balcon, and the lieder recital, Mein Traum: Schubert - Weber - Schumann, again with Raphaël Pichon and Pygmalion.
