Souls of Mischief

The hip-hop collective Souls of Mischief is best known for the gold-certified single "93 'til Infinity," which served as the title track of the group's 1993 debut album and became a staple of West Coast hip-hop. The group formed two years earlier in Oakland, California, where rappers Phesto, Tajai, Opio, and A-Plus began collaborating as high-school students. They were still teenagers when they signed with Jive Records and released 93 'til Infinity, an album that merged live instrumentation with vintage funk and jazz samples. The album reached number 17 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, with the title track climbing to number 72 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 11 on Hot Rap Singles. No Man's Land followed in 1995 and earned a minor hit on the Hot Rap Singles chart with "Rock It Like That." After releasing 1998's Focus and 2000's Trilogy: Conflict, Climax, Resolution, the group took a hiatus from the recording studio for the better part of a decade, then returned to the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart with 2009's Montezuma's Revenge. Although the album stalled at number 93, its followup, 2014's There Is Only Now, fared much better, reaching number 35 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and number 20 on Top Rap Albums.
