Soulfly are an American thrash metal act who combine formulaic death metal with Brazilian tribal music. The unusual musical combination came about because the band's founder, frontman and rhythm guitarist Max Cavalera, was the lead singer in Brazilian thrash metal exponents Sepultura. With such an unlikely mix of influences within a relatively narrow genre, the first six studio albums released by the band all made it into the Billboard 200 with their second album, 'Primitive' peaking at number 32. In interviews Cavalera has stated that he founded the band with the intention of combining thrash metal sounds with his spiritual beliefs. Having fronted Sepultura, one of the world's best known thrash metal bands, the decision to start afresh was brave, especially as he was dealing with personal tragedy at the time following the death of his stepson. The band suffered numerous personnel changes over the years and Cavalera is now the only remaining original member. With eleven studio albums to their credit the band have carved an unusual niche for their music and Cavalera's charismatic leadership and unique musical style ensure the group are always well received at festivals and metal venues throughout the world.
