Soul Train Gang

The Soul Train Gang was an American R&B vocal group formed in the early 1975. The group consisted of Gerald Brown, Terry Brown, Judy Jones (later replaced by Denise Smith), Patricia Williamson, and Hollis Pippin. Initially, the name "Soul Train Gang" referred to the dancers on Don Cornelius' hit television program Soul Train. In 1975, the name was given to an R&B vocal quintet by Cornelius and Dick Griffey to announce the founding of Soul Train Records (later SOLAR Records). The group's debut album, Don Cornelius Presents the Soul Train Gang, was released in 1975. Produced by Cornelius and Griffey, it included "Soul Train '75", which peaked at number 75 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 9 on the R&B chart. Their second album, The Soul Train Gang, produced by Norman Harris, was released in 1976 and featured the lead single "Ooh Cha" which reached number 107 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart and number 62 on the R&B chart. The group also recorded a cover of Stevie Wonder's "My Cherie Amour", which peaked at number 93 on the Hot 100 and number 21 on the dance chart. After disbanding in 1977, Gerald Brown joined Shalamar the following year, replacing original member Gary Mumford.
