Soft Ballet

Maki Fujii formed Soft Ballet in 1987 with Ken Morioka and Ryoichi Endo, and the trio issued the limited single "Tokio Bang!" the same year, marking their first public appearance. After a brief indie period, Soft Ballet signed with Alfa Records in 1989 and released the debut album Earth Born, followed by Document and the mini‑album 3 [drai] in 1990, each showcasing the members’ divergent styles. The 1991 release 愛と平和 reached the Oricon Top 10, bringing the band national attention and a subsequent contract with Victor Entertainment. In 1992 they issued Million Mirrors and Reiz [Raits], and in 1993 the single "Engaging Universe" became a hit, leading to a UK 12‑inch release of "Threshold". The group toured extensively, including a five‑stop tour with Luna Sea and Buck‑Tick in 1994. Soft Ballet disbanded on 23 July 1995 after the album Form and a remix compilation Forms: Remix For Ordinary People; the band released a final compilation titled The Ultimate Best Of Soft Ballet in 1995. After a brief reunion in 2002–2003, the group released Symbiont and Menopause, and disbanded again on 17 December 2003; Maki Fujii died on 3 June 2016.
