SML

Experimental and improvisational jazz / post-rock collective SML – Small Medium Large - was formed in Los Angeles, California in 2022. Originally meeting several years before while playing alongside post-rock guitarist Jeff Parker, the members of the group include bassist Anna Butterss (Jason Isbell, Phoebe Bridgers, and Makaya McCraven), synthesizer player Jeremiah Chiu (Icy Demons, Ariel Kalma, and Marta Sofia Honer), sax player Josh Johnson (Leon Bridges, Meshell Ndegeocello, and Carlos Niño), guitarist Gregory Uhlmann (Perfume Genius, Sam Wilkes, and Meg Duffy) and percussionist Booker Stardrum (Amirtha Kidambi, Lee Ranaldo, Lisel, and Patrick Shiroishi). Each member of the quintet has their own career and work on several projects outside of SML, but they have been gaining more attention when they come together as a group. While known as a five-piece, they have performed in smaller and larger configurations. After several years of performing together, the group released their debut album, Small Medium Large, in 2024. Recorded in 2022 and 2023, the recordings were improvisational jams that were later edited and reassembled to create an energetic and experimental album that received critical acclaim.
