Sidney Erwin, known as Sid King, was born on October 15, 1936, in Denton, Texas. He started his music career as a singer and guitarist, forming a band with Melvin Robinson in 1952. The group initially performed country music and Western swing under the name the Western Melody Makers. In 1954, they signed to Columbia Records as Sid King and the Five Strings, incorporating rhythm and blues influences into their "hillbilly bebop" style. Between 1955 and 1957, they recorded nine singles for Columbia, including "Good Rockin' Baby" and "Gonna Shake This Shack Tonight". The band toured widely and performed on notable radio shows but were dismissed from Columbia in 1957 and disbanded the following year. King later reunited with his brother Billy for performances at rock 'n' roll festivals and released an album, Let's Get Loose, in 1987.
