Saragossa Band

The Saragossa Band, a German pop band from Munich, formed in 1977 and quickly rose to prominence. The group's music blended pop with elements of calypso and samba, capturing the zeitgeist of their early years. Their breakthrough came with the release of "Big Bamboo" (1977), a song sung in the Caribbean Papiamentu dialect, which gained significant attention. This was followed by successful singles such as "Rasta Man" (1979) and "Zabadak" (1979), both of which reached number 10 in German charts. Subsequent releases like "Ginger Red" (1980), "Agadou" (1981), and "Aiko Aiko" (1981) did not achieve the same chart success but maintained a strong following, with "Agadou" becoming a staple in beach bars and discos. The Saragossa Band released several albums throughout their career, including Za Za Zabadak (1981), The new big Za Za Zabadak (1983) and The super Za-Za-Zabadak (1987), which charted at number 3, 14 and 20, respectively. They also embarked on notable tours, such as their 1984 South Sea tour. The band continued to perform extensively in countries like Romania, Hungary, and Austria, and occasionally appeared on television. Founding member and songwriter Alfred Rudek passed away on July 20, 2018, at the age of 63 and the band continued to perform well into the next decade.
