San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus

The San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus (SFGMC), founded by Jon Reed Sims on October 30, 1978, in San Francisco, California, is recognized as the world's first openly gay chorus. The group emerged during the gay rights movement and held its inaugural rehearsal on October 30, 1978. SFGMC's first public performance was exactly four weeks later, on November 27, at an impromptu memorial at San Francisco City Hall for Harvey Milk and Mayor George Moscone. Under the direction of Dick Kramer, the chorus gained immediate musical acclaim and co-directed its first official concert on December 20, 1978. SFGMC embarked on a national tour in 1981, performing in nine U.S. cities. This tour helped spark the formation of LGBT choruses worldwide. Notable albums include How Fair This Place, Brahms, Bernstein & The Boys!, and NakedMan.
