Founded in 1882 by order of Tsar Alexander III of Russia, the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra initially performed exclusively for Russia's imperial court. In the 1900s, it began to perform publicly and broadened its repertoire beyond Russian music. Following the Russian Revolution in 1917, it was transformed into a state orchestra. In 1924, it adopted the name Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra, which remained until 1991 when the orchestra was renamed to Saint Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Following Mravinsky's death in 1988, Yuri Temirkanov took over as director and led the orchestra until 2022.
