If Ramble Jon Krohn has chosen RJD2, inspired by the Star Wars robot R2D2, as his stage name, it's probably to blur the lines, as he knows so well how to do with his skilful blend of instrumental rap and electro. A passionate hip-hop DJ born in Eugene, Oregon, on May 27, 1976, he has collaborated with numerous underground rappers such as Cage and Cannibal Ox. His first two albums, Deadringer (2002) and Since We Last Spoke (2004), feature instrumentals that define his style. His track "A Beautiful Mine", taken from the album Magnificent City in collaboration with Aceyalone, was used as the theme tune for the TV series Mad Men. On The Third Hand (2007), he lets himself be sung to, producing a dazzling mix of rap, pop and electro in the footsteps of Wax Tailor and Amon Tobin. In 2010, The Colossus is released on his own Electrical Connexions label. It was followed in 2013 by More Is Than Isn't and in 2015 by a collaboration with rapper STS(STS x RJD2), with whom he did it again in 202 for Escape from Sweet Auburn. RJD2 continues his collages on the album Dame Fortune (2016), followed by The Fun Ones (2020) and Visions Out of Limelight (2024).
