Red House Painters were an American rock band formed in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1988 by singer-songwriter Mark Kozelek and drummer Anthony Koutsos. After moving to San Francisco in 1989, they added guitarist Gorden Mack and bassist Jerry Vessel. In 1992, the band signed with 4AD and released their debut album Down Colorful Hill in 1993, followed by two self-titled albums that same year and the EP Shock Me in early 1994. Their introspective work continued with Ocean Beach in 1995. After parting ways with 4AD, Kozelek released Songs for a Blue Guitar on Supreme Recordings in 1996. The band's final album, Old Ramon, was released by Sub Pop in 2001 after the band had started to wind down. Red House Painters are recognized as pioneers of the slowcore subgenre.
