Raphaela Gromes

Raphaela Johanna Gromes, born on March 16, 1991 in Munich, Germany, is a German cellist. She began her musical education at age four, receiving cello instruction from her mother, Astrid Hedler-Gromes. In 2005, she debuted as a soloist with Friedrich Gulda's Cello Concerto. Gromes studied under Peter Bruns at the Leipzig University of Music and Theatre from 2006 to 2010. She has performed with notable orchestras such as the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra and Wiener Tonkünstler-Orchester. Her discography includes albums like Violoncellosonaten von Strauss & Mendelssohn-Bartholdy (2014) and Richard Strauss: Cello Sonatas (2020), which won the Diapason d’or and Chamber Choice Award from BBC Music Magazine in 2020. Gromes is known for her advocacy work with organizations such as the José Carreras Leukemia Foundation.
