Project Pop

Indonesian musical comedy troupe Project Pop initially formed in Bandung in 1996 as a spinoff project from predecessors Project-P but set about carving out their own lane by writing their own original music. Consisting of seven members – Hermann Josis Mokalu (Yosi), the late Muhammad Fachroni (O'on), Djoni Permato (Udjo), Gumilar Nurochman (Gugum), Wahyu Rudi Astadi (Odie), and Kartika Rachel Setia Redjeki Panggabean (Tika; the only female member) – Project Pop's career failed to take off at first, with their debut 1996 album, Bakpia vs Lumpia, released to little fanfare. However, their reputation started to gather steam with the release of 2002's Tu Wa Ga Pat (Satu Dua Tiga Empat or One Two Three Four), helping the group to break through to the mainstream and paving the way for a future run of albums that mixed pop, rap, rock and more styles with the Indonesian folk of dangdut. They went double platinum with their fourth album Pop OK, released in July 2003, and continued to build on their knack for witty songcraft across a string of other LPs, including 2013's Move On. 2022 saw the group make a comeback with new single "Selamat Hari Lebaran."
