Professor Murder is a dance-punk quartet from New York City. The band, consisting of Jesse Cohen on keyboards, Andy Craven on drums, Michael Bell-Smith on vocals and percussion, and Tony Blankets on bass and melodica, initially gained attention with their debut EP Professor Murder Rides the Subway, released on Kanine Records in July 2006. Their music blended synthesizers and percussion-based compositions, drawing comparisons to post-punk and new wave bands of the late 1970s and early 1980s. In 2007, they released their single "Dutch Hex" and followed up with another EP, Professor Murder on a Desert Island, in 2008. The band's name was inspired by a character played by Sam Sarpong in HBO's Mr. Show with Bob and David. In 2009, Michael Bell-Smith, Jesse Cohen, and Tony Blankets collaborated with Eric Emm of Tanlines to form the new band Restless People.
