Phi-Psonics is a Los Angeles-based ensemble led by bassist Seth Ford-Young, known for its meditative blend of jazz, classical, and spiritual influences. Born in the Washington, D.C. area, Ford-Young moved to California in the early 1990s, inspired by Mingus, the Coltranes, and composers like Bach and Satie. He immersed himself in music, touring and recording with artists including Tom Waits and Beats Antique. After relocating to Los Angeles in 2010, he began composing for Phi-Psonics sinc 2020 with Sylvain Carton (baritone and tenor saxophone, flute), Mitchel Yoshida (keyboards), and Josh Collazo (drums). Issued after The Cradle (2020) and Octava (2023), their third album, Expanding to One, features live recordings shaped by spontaneous collaboration, reflecting Ford-Young’s vision of musical community and personal introspection.
