People Under the Stairs

People Under the Stairs was an American hip-hop ensemble from Los Angeles established in 1997. The group consisted of the musicians Christopher Portugal, known as Thes One, and Michael Turner, known as Double K. They achieved professional recognition for a musical style characterized by underground hip-hop and sampling. The ensemble was founded after the musicians met at a local record store in 1996 while attending high schools in the mid-city area. Their recording career began with the debut single "The Next Step II" (1998), which achieved professional recognition for selling out in seven minutes at a local store. People Under the Stairs achieved professional recognition for the debut studio recording The Next Step (1998) and signing with the label Om Records in 1999. Their discography included the studio recording Question in the Form of an Answer (2000), which featured the single "Youth Explosion" (2000) and the single "We'll Be There" (2000), which reached number 36 on the Hot Rap Tracks chart. The ensemble achieved professional recognition for performing at festivals including the Glastonbury Festival, the Essential Music Festival, and the Reading and Leeds Festivals. Their recording career included the studio recording Stepfather (2006) and the studio recording Fun DMC (2008). People Under the Stairs achieved professional recognition for the studio recording 12 Step Program (2014) and the final studio recording Sincerely, The P (2019). The group became inactive in 2019. Turner died in 2021.
