Pedro Infante Cruz, born José Pedro Infante Cruz on November 18, 1917, in Mazatlán, Sinaloa, Mexico, was a singer and actor. He began his career as a carpenter and barber while pursuing his dream of becoming a singer, performing with various orchestras and at local radio stations. His first musical recording was "El soldado raso" released on November 19, 1943. Pedro Infante's acting debut came in the film En un burro tres baturros (1939), where he played an extra role. He gained prominence through collaborations with director Ismael Rodríguez in films such as Mexicanos al grito de guerra (1943) and Escándalo de estrellas (1944). His breakthrough came with the trilogy Nosotros los pobres (1947), Ustedes los ricos (1948), and Pepe El Toro (1952), where he portrayed Pepe el Toro. These films not only showcased his acting prowess but also highlighted his charisma and ability to connect with audiences, making him a beloved figure in Mexican cinema. His musical career flourished alongside his acting. He released numerous albums, including Noche Plateada (1952) with La Orquesta de Noé Fajardo and A la Orilla del Mar (1953). His notable songs include "Amorcito Corazón" and "Cien Años," which became staples in Mexican music. Pedro Infante's ability to blend traditional Mexican music with his distinctive voice made him a pioneer in the genre. His passion for aviation led to several accidents. He had accumulated 2989 hours of flight time as a pilot and was registered under the name "Capitán Cruz." Prior to his fatal crash, he had survived two other serious accidents. The first occurred in Guasave, Sinaloa, where his plane failed to gain altitude and crashed into a maize field, leaving him with a small scar on his chin. The second accident near Zitácuaro, Michoacán, resulted in the implantation of a platinum plate in his skull. Despite these setbacks, Pedro Infante continued to thrive in both music and film. His contributions to Mexican cinema and music solidified his status as a key figure during the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema. On April 15, 1957, Infante died in a plane crash in Mérida, Yucatán. Despite his untimely death, Infante's influence endured. Posthumous releases such as El Cantante del Siglo / Rancheras (2002) and Rancheras mi Tenampa (2002) kept his music alive for new generations. His legacy includes not only his musical contributions but also his impact on Mexican cinema, where he remains an iconic figure.
