Paddy Carty

Paddy Carty, born in 1929 in Rafford, Loughrea, County Galway, Ireland, was an Irish flutist. He began playing the tin whistle at age six and later transitioned to the Irish flute. In the late 1940s, he joined the Aughrim Slopes Céilí Band and collaborated with fiddlers Paddy Fahey and Patrick Kelly. Carty's breakthrough came when he switched from a traditional eight-hole flute to a metal Boehm system flute, enhancing his playing power. He won the All-Ireland Fleadh Championship three times as a soloist (1960, 1961, and 1963) and twice with the Leitrim Céilí Band (1959 and 1962). His notable albums include Traditional Music of Ireland (1974), recorded with Mick O'Connor, and Traditional Irish Music (1974). Carty passed away in 1980.
