Omar & the Howlers, an American blues rock band from Texas, was formed in 1973. Led by singer/guitarist Omar Kent Dykes, who grew up in McComb, Mississippi and began playing guitar at age 12, the original lineup started as a party band in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. In 1976, they relocated to Austin, Texas. Their debut album Big Leg Beat was released in 1980 on Amazing Records. The band's breakthrough came with the 1987 release of Hard Times in the Land of Plenty, which sold over half a million copies and featured the top 20 hit "Hard Times in the Land of Plenty". Omar & the Howlers have subsequently released more than 25 albums, including Monkey Land (1990) and Muddy Springs Road (1995).
