New Model Army

New Model Army is an indie band from England that was founded in 1980. Stylistically, the band originates from the punk scene, but also uses elements of rock and folk in their songs. New Model Army initially started out as a trio with singer and guitarist Justin Sullivan, Stuart Morrow on bass and Phil Tompkins on drums. It was not until 1983 that New Model Army released their debut single "Bittersweet". The first TV appearances and tours followed. The debut album Vengeance reached number 73 in the British charts in 1984. The real breakthrough came in 1986 with the album The Ghost of Cain (number 45 in the UK). The single "51st State" on the album became the band's anthem. The band went on an extensive tour and also played in the USA for the first time. Another album, Thunder and Consolation, followed in 1989. The album made it to number 20 in the UK and also reached a respectable number 23 in Germany. The outstanding single is the melancholy song "Vagabonds". The subsequent albums Purity (1990) and The Love of Hopeless Causes (1993) also reached the top 30 in the charts in many countries. After that, things became much quieter around New Model Army. There are also repeated line-up changes in the band. Of the original line-up, singer Justin Sullivan remains the only constant. It was not until 2016 that the band returned to success. The album Winter became an international success, reaching number 20 in Germany and number 25 in the UK, among others. Three years later, From Here followed. The longplayer made it into the German Top 10 at No. 6. In 2023, New Model Army released Sinfonia. The live album combines well-known songs by the band with an orchestral sound. The album made it back into the top 10 charts in Germany at number 6. Another studio album, Unbroken, followed just one year later. The album climbed to number 5 in Germany and also reached top positions in other countries. Another live album, Live SO36, followed at the end of March. This reached number 14 in the German charts.
