Necromantia

Necromantia was a Greek black metal band from Athens that was active between 1989 and 2021. The ensemble was founded by George “The Magus” Zacharopoulos and Makis “Baron Blood” Kanakaris. Alongside Rotting Christ and Varathron, they achieved professional recognition as pioneers of the Greek black metal scene. The group is famous for a musical style characterized by the absence of rhythm guitar, which was substituted by an eight-string bass, and for the incorporation of instruments such as the saxophone and flute. Their debut studio album, Crossing the Fiery Path, was released in 1993 through Osmose Productions. The ensemble’s discography includes the studio recordings Scarlet Evil Witching Black (1995) and IV: Malice (2000), alongside the EP Ancient Pride (1997). In 2007, the band released the studio album The Sound of Lucifer Storming Heaven. Their final studio recording, To the Depths We Descend... (2021), was released posthumously to commemorate Baron Blood, who died in 2019. The ensemble officially disbanded in 2021.
