Clifford Smith, known professionally as Mr. Vegas, was born on December 29, 1974, in Surrey, Kingston, Jamaica. He is a Jamaican singer and singjay who blends elements of rap, toasting, and singing into his unique style. Mr. Vegas began his music career after being discovered by producer Don Yute in 1996. His breakthrough came in 1997 with the hit single "Nike Air", which he recorded while recovering from a jaw injury. This success led to the release of his debut album, Heads High, on March 14, 1998, under Greensleeves Records. The album reached Number five on the Billboard Top Reggae Albums chart and included the hit single "Heads High", which peaked at Number 69 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart. Throughout his career, Mr. Vegas released several notable albums including Damn Right (2001), featuring collaborations with Shaggy and Big Yard; Pull Up (2004); Constant Spring (2005); and Hot It Up (2007). In 2008, he announced a temporary retirement from music to spend time with his family but returned in 2012 with the album Sweet Jamaica. This album featured an All-Star Remix of "The Voices of Sweet Jamaica" with artists like Shaggy and U-Roy. Mr. Vegas received several awards for this work, including nominations at the MOBO Awards and IRAWMA. His subsequent albums include Bruk It Down (2013), Reggae Euphoria (2014), Lovers Rock and Soul (2015) and ISM (2018).
