Moses Boyd

Jazz drummer Moses Boyd was born on April 30, 1991, in Catford, England. He came to prominence with the release of his debut album, the Mercury Prize-nominated Dark Matter (2020). A figure in the London jazz scene since 2015, Moses Boyd began his musical apprenticeship at the age of 13 and underwent specialized training at college. Influenced by artists as diverse as Miles Davis and Dizzee Rascal, Moses Boyd’s experimental style mixed nu-jazz, grime, electronica, and jazz fusion. He joined the Peter Edwards Trio and appeared on a pair of albums with the band - 2014’s Safe and Sound and 2016’s A Matter of Instinct. He also formed the saxophone-drums duo Binker & Jones (with Binker Golding) and released a trio of albums between 2015 and 2018. Moses Boyd then created a label and formed a band, both named Exodus, releasing the Moses Boyd Exodus album Displaced Diaspora in 2018. Two years later, his debut solo album, Dark Matter, was released to critical acclaim. During the course of his career, he won awards from the AIM Independent Music Awards, the Jazz FM Awards, the MOBO Awards and the Parliamentary Jazz Awards among others. Dark Matters was nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2020 but did not win.
