Michael D. Higgins, born Mícheál Dónal Ó hUigínn on April 18, 1941 in Limerick, Ireland, is a politician, poet, broadcaster, and sociologist who has been serving as the President of Ireland since 2011. Higgins began his political career by joining Fianna Fáil while studying at University College Galway (UCG), later switching to the Labour Party. He was appointed to the Seanad in 1973 and elected to Dáil Éireann in 1981, representing the Galway West constituency. Throughout his career, Higgins served as Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht from 1993 to 1997 and Mayor of Galway on two occasions. He was elected President of Ireland in 2011 and re-elected in 2018 with a landslide victory, attaining the largest personal mandate in the history of the Republic of Ireland. In 2025, the Irish president recorded the poetry album Against All Certainty with ambient composer Myles O'Reilly.
